IELTS General Writing
There are two writing tasks in the IELTS General Writing examination such as Writing task 1 and Writing task 2. Time duration is 60 minutes for both the tasks. In task 1, we need to write a formal letter or informal letter with proper grammar, lexical resources, fluency and coherence. In Task 2, candidates write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. The whole answers should be written in the answer booklet. Notes or bullet points are not acceptable as answers.
In Writing Task 1, candidates need to write a letter in the form of an informal, semi-formal or formal letter of at least 150 words in the answer booklet provided. The situations they are asked to write about are common, everyday ones. Need to explain a situation based on the subject. Questions are on the following types such as likes or dislikes, express opinions or complaints, make requests or make suggestions or recommendations.The format of the letter is completely depends on what type of audience we deal with and that will help them to achieve their purpose for writing, writing to a friend is informal letter or writing to officials is semi-formal or formal. Candidates do not need to include any addresses at the head of their letters.
Candidates should spend no more than 20 minutes on this task. They are asked to write at least 150 words and will be penalised if their answer is too short. While candidates will not be penalised for writing more than 150 words.Task 1 has less point than task 2, so we need to spend less time on task 1 than task 2. Spend much on Task 2 contributes twice as much to the Writing band score.
